“This program is presented in its original form. It may contain outdated cultural depictions. ”So goes the warning text that pops up when viewers stream Disney classics such as The Jungle Book, Dumbo and Lady and Lufsen via the Disney + streaming service.

Racist stereotypes

The reason is that the films have been criticized for containing racist stereotypes. One such example is found in the movie Dumbo (1941) and a scene with a collection of ravens. One of the rams is called Jim, which is a reference to the racist character Jim Crow that was used in the 20th century as a derogatory word to describe black people, writes the Independent magazine.

And the initiative receives both rose and rice. Critics say the warning could be interpreted as apologizing for the content of the films and indicating that while they were being done they did not know better, while those who favored the initiative think it is a sign that the problem is being taken seriously.
