In response to the Israeli operation, Palestinian fighters fired a salvo of rockets against Israel, sounding the sirens of alert in the port city of Ashdod, located about 20 kilometers from the border, said witnesses. .

"There has been a significant number of shots fired at Israel," Israeli army spokesman Jonathan Conricus said in a conference call, saying the army was preparing for "several days" clashes.

Islamic Jihad has threatened Israel with "inevitable" retaliation.

Hamas said Israel "bears full responsibility for all the consequences of this escalation", promising that Baha Abu al-Atta's death will not go unpunished.
