Switzerland is considering whether to keep a three-month supply of coffee in the country for emergency use after public protests over the issue, news reports said.

The government was considering abandoning its commitment to keep a 15,000 tonne raw coffee stock in April, the Swiss newspaper Tagess Anzeiger said in April, saying coffee was not a necessity given its low calorie intake.

According to Bloomberg, the idea was met with protests from coffee makers and consumers alike.

A lobby group of coffee traders, factory owners and cafes has drawn grim scenarios to emphasize the importance of keeping stocks, such as the possibility of war in the Middle East, coffee crops being hit by epidemics and so on.

Two-thirds of respondents said they could not imagine life without coffee.

"No final decisions have been taken so far," Bloomberg quoted Swiss Economy Ministry spokeswoman Irene Harnichberg as saying, adding that the assessment process was still underway and the decision was expected in the first half of next year.
