An unidentified drone was shot down on Friday, November 8, by the Iranian army in the Bandar-e Mahchahr area, a port in southwestern Iran overlooking the Gulf, according to Iranian news agencies. "The air defense went into action in the morning and destroyed" this aircraft flying "in the sky of Bandar-e Mahchahr", in the province of Khuzestan, writes the news agency Isna.

Iran further claimed that the drone in question belonged to a foreign power, the state-run news agency reported.

The aircraft was shot down using the Mersad missile system, according to Tasnim agency, close to ultraconservatives and generally well-informed on defense issues

Last June, Tehran neutralized an American drone when it had just entered Iranian airspace in the southern coastal province of Hormozgan. It was a RQ-4 Global Hawk, one of the largest in the United States. No photos or videos have been posted about the incident.

Following this incident, US President Donald Trump said he canceled reprisals at the last minute, so as not to cause heavy casualties.

The tension between the United States and Iran has reached new peaks for six months, against a background of military escalation in the Gulf and friction around the Iranian nuclear program.

Washington on Thursday called on the international community to take "severe" measures to put pressure on Iran after the country's recovery of its uranium enrichment activities in an underground plant. Tehran intends to respond to the US withdrawal in 2018, the Iran nuclear agreement, and the reinstatement of US economic sanctions.
