Protesters in Lebanon cut off a number of streets in the capital Beirut and its suburbs, despite tight security measures to counter them.

The demonstrators were able to cut off the Ring Bridge and the Zouk and Jal El Dib roads north of Beirut, and several roads in the Bekaa, Akkar and Sidon.

Demonstrators called for a general strike on Monday, disrupting movement in public and private facilities. This comes as Hezbollah gave the demonstrators until the morning hours to open roads.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators had rallied Sunday in Beirut, Tripoli and other Lebanese cities after calls for a sit-in under the name of "one of unity."

This coincided with previous demonstrations in the vicinity of the Presidential Palace in Baabda in support of President Michel Aoun.

For his part, the Lebanese president said in an interview with his supporters that corruption can not be removed easily, because it permeates the joints of the state.
