INTERVIEW
The Queen of Shabbat (Dargaud), volume 9 of the Rabbi's Cat comic, was released last Friday. Guest of the show Ça fait du bien, Friday, Europe 1, the illustrator, author and director Joann Sfar returned on his childhood, with a father lawyer Don Juan and a mother pop singer, who died while he was only 3 ½ years old.
At the microphone of Anne Roumanoff, the writer explained the influence of this tragic event on his art: "Most of my heroes are orphaned in my comics or in my novels because they are my childhood memories." Joann Sfar remarks: "There are a lot of fake orphans in the children's books, there is a fantasy of the orphan, and in" Harry Potter "we can see that the kids enjoy saying, 'Oh, poor thing little orphan ... When we have this for real, it creates interesting voids ... "
And these voids, Joann Sfar fills them with drawings, stories. "I do not have any gaps, I really have gaps," he continues. "A lack is when we knew it and we miss it, I do not remember, so I went into drawing to have faces, representations."
"My father was Don Draper in Mad Men "
His father was a lawyer and Don Juan. "It was Don Draper in Mad Men, a guy who was born poor in a small town in Algeria in 1933.
