Regarding the nuclear fuel remaining in the spent fuel pool of Fukushima Daiichi NPS Unit 2, TEPCO drilled holes in the reactor building walls to suppress the scattering of dust containing radioactive materials, and then used cranes, etc. I decided to put it in and take it out.

In the spent fuel pool at the top of the reactor building of Fukushima Daiichi Unit 2, 615 nuclear fuels remain.

In this regard, TEPCO has studied a plan to dismantle the upper part of the reactor building and take out nuclear fuel, and a plan to make a hole in the wall of the building.

On October 31, the company announced that it had finally decided to make a hole in the reactor building wall.

The reason for this is that because the building is not demolished, the scattering of dust containing radioactive materials is suppressed, and the inflow of rainwater is prevented to reduce the generation of contaminated water.

TEPCO will build a work table approximately 40 meters high next to the reactor building, and then use a crane or the like in a hole in the wall to remove nuclear fuel.

We want to decide when to start work and detailed processes during this fiscal year.

Akira Ono, representative of TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi decommissioning propulsion company, said, “We wanted to avoid deteriorating the environment by dismantling the upper part of the building, which is a major point of judgment, such as how to prevent the diffusion of dust around the nuclear power plant.” Said.

In Unit 1, Unit 3, and Unit 4,

At the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, there is a spent fuel pool in each of Units 1 to 4 that caused the accident.

Of these, Unit 4 was the earliest and all 1535 units were removed five years ago.

Subsequently, Unit 3 started taking out from April and shows a plan to finish taking it out by the end of the next fiscal year, but work is often interrupted due to equipment troubles.

Unit 1 plans to start taking out the prospect of the 2023 fiscal year, have been made ready, such as the current investigation.
