Before leaving office, Saad Hariri will have to continue running the day-to-day business. The Lebanese Prime Minister, who presented Tuesday afternoon the resignation of his government, was charged by the head of state.

In a brief statement, Michel Aoun implicitly accepted his resignation, assuring that he had "asked the government to continue the running of current affairs until the formation of a new government", in accordance with the Lebanese Constitution.

However, Michel Aoun did not want the resignation, nor his powerful ally the pro-Iranian Hezbollah, the only party still armed in Lebanon, whose leader Hassan Nasrallah warned against the risk of "chaos".

Political uncertainty

The announcement of the departure of Saad Hariri was reflected on Wednesday by signs of relaxation on the ground, with the removal of most of the barriers installed by the demonstrators. But it opens an era of political uncertainty. It had indeed taken eight months of negotiations between the innumerable actors of Lebanese political life to form the previous cabinet.

According to the press, Saad Hariri could try to set up a renewed team, made up mostly of technocrats recognized for their competence, but he should face many political resistances.

In accordance with the denominational system that governs political life in Lebanon, the post of prime minister belongs to a member of the Sunni community.
