The number of patients with skin cancer in the Netherlands is increasing at such a fast pace that the pressure on hospitals seems to be too high. NOS writes this on Tuesday based on the Skin Cancer Report in the Netherlands, which is published on Tuesday by the Integraal Kankercentrum Nederland (IKNL).

Researchers have mapped the developments of the past thirty years. It shows that 70,000 new cases are added every year, or 900 patients with extra skin cancer per hospital, according to the IKNL.

The knowledge center states that skin cancer care must be redesigned to relieve pressure on hospitals. That threatens to increase differently in the coming years. Better cooperation between dermatologists and general practitioners would be necessary.

There would also be a national prevention plan to curb the rise in skin cancer.

The main cause of the disease is over-exposure to UV radiation from the sun or a tanning bed, so the IKNL advocates warning people about the dangers of the tanning bed and the careful use of sunscreen.
