"All the elders have been children first, but few remember." This famous phrase from The Little Prince highlights that period of life where innocence and stupor dominate. And no, there are not many places that allow you to relive those emotions, although the exceptions are not lacking. As is the case of La Scuola Guesthouse , an open pension within an elementary school, located in the municipality of Lusiana, in the province of Vicenza, an hour and a half from Verona and Venice .

This building, built during the 20s, was a school until the early 60's. Residence of friars and vacationers throughout the following decades, opened in 2013 under a new concept. "The initial idea was to launch a small tourist activity in the middle of the hills," explains owner Valeria Carfora, "but when my partner and I discovered this school, surrounded by such a fascinating landscape, we decided to buy it to open an alternative b & b ". That is, they wanted to create a fun and at the same time nostalgic atmosphere . And they hit the spot.

The room used by the teachers of yesteryear.

Just cross the threshold of the entrance to be children again. In the living room, a large black slate with the letters of the alphabet in italics stands out . Both the furniture and the objects that decorate the room have a vintage style. Moreover, the letters to learn to write, glued to the walls, are original objects of the 50s. In fact, much of the decoration comes from street markets. "There are also articles from our trips to France, a country where there are beautifully decorated small buildings," continues Valeria.

VINTAGE STYLE

In La Scuola it is easy to be surprised. "You can remember objects that you had forgotten like old backpacks, numerical tables or old notebooks with math problems, " says the owner. "Spending a night in an old school is fun and at the same time tender," he admits. What most attracts guests' attention is the floor material. Built with the typical three-color tiles (beige, black and maroon), it preserves the original pavement of the school. From the same era are the ceiling beams and window frames.

Entrance to the old Italian school.

Even the rooms do not leave anyone indifferent. Inspired by the subjects studied in the school, they are decorated and furnished according to the subject of the discipline. From maps and balloons in the Geography class to the teaching tables on flowers, herbs and fruits of Science, through literature books on History and Letters . Lovers of problems and numbers can opt for the Arithmetic room. Each one is equipped with all the comforts, although none has a television. "It is for our guests to enjoy the rest," says the owner.

THE FOURTH OF THE TEACHER

Another alternative is to stay in the teacher's room. Located in the attic, it is the most romantic and the most requested room. Equipped with a sewing machine and a Belle Époque style bathtub , it boasts its own history, as many teachers slept together in the attic because they could not return home at night because of the unworkable roads. Hence, the idea of paying tribute to these women who used to spend much of their time in school.

Several backpacks hung by way of decoration.

The same students of the school told these stories to the owners. "The people who studied here today are between 60 and 80 years old," says Valeria, "we found them and they told us many anecdotes." Some of the former students, who had to emigrate abroad after the war, returned to Lusiana with their children to sleep in La Scuola. Others reside nearby and visit it often. Like Mrs. Antonia, 86, who still remembers the desks. "I'm glad my old school is now prettier and full of flowers. At that time we were poor but happy. We loved doing gymnastics in the playground and drinking hot milk and polenta in the morning, " he admits. "Each student had to carry a piece of firewood for the classroom stove."

Itineraries by bicycle, climbing, walking walks through the natural landscapes and cultural tourism in the nearby municipalities are some of the activities that can be done in the territory surrounding La Scuola. Not surprisingly, the pension is built in the highlands of the Seven Municipalities, near the towns of Bassano del Grappa, Marostica, Breganze, Schio and Asiago.
