La sagrada familia is one of Barcelona's most visited tourist attractions. The cathedral, designed by architect Antoni Gaudí, does not let visitors in because protesters protesting the imprisonment of nine Catalan politicians are at the entrance.

On Twitter, cathedral staff announced early Friday afternoon that "a group of protesters have stationed themselves outside the church and are blocking the entrance, we cannot guarantee visitors can enter". At 14, the next message came: "To ensure the safety of visitors and staff, all normal activities are stopped during the day due to today's demonstrations".

The newspaper La Vanguardia writes that protesters gathered outside the cathedral at 11 o'clock and shouted slogans as "freedom for the political prisoners".

Sentenced to prison

According to the magazine La Vanguardia, prostitutes are part of the strikes announced by Catalan trade unions.

Recently, nine Catalan politicians were sentenced to long prison sentences after the region in 2017 called for an independence vote that violates the Spanish Constitution. Former regional president Carles Puigdemont lives in self-imposed exile in Belgium and surrendered to the Belgian authorities earlier on Friday after a European arrest warrant was announced for the second time against him.
