NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Mir, who have just launched their first pure space walk outside the International Space Station, have made history.

This is the second time for NASA to make a historic breakthrough in human spaceflight.

NASA was forced to abruptly cancel the first spacewalk of a women's team last March because there were no space suits of the right size for the women.

The goal of the spacewalk today is to replace the defective energy charge unit that helps regulate the collection of energy from the solar array at the station.

The spacewalk will be the 221st outside the two-decade-old International Space Station. The spacewalk is scheduled to last five to six hours.
