US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he "loves" the Kurds, but at the same time offered some "clarifications".

Asked if it was possible to build an alliance with the Kurds against Turkey against the backdrop of the recent military offensive in northeastern Syria, the US president responded that the Kurds "did not help" the United States during World War II and the Normandy landings.

"The Kurds are fighting for their land," Trump said at the White House.

He said he was based on a very strong article, probably published on the conservative website, Town Hall, adding, "They did not help us during World War II. They did not help us in Normandy, for example."

"We have spent a lot of money to support the Kurds, both in terms of ammunition, weapons and money," he said.
