Smelt fishing begins in Onuma, southern Hokkaido, October 10 at 10:54

The smelt fishing started in the lake, Onuma, in Nanae-cho, southern Hokkaido.

Onuma's smelt fishing at the foot of Mt. Komagatake in Hokkaido began about 90 years ago when eggs were brought in from Abashiri Lake on the Okhotsk side.

This year's fishing was lifted on the 1st of this month, and on the 10th, local fisherman Yoshiaki Tsushima went around the 13 stationary nets set on the lake from around 4:30 am.

On the 9th, we couldn't fish due to the strong winds, but onuma on the 10th morning, the weather was clear and there was no wind.

On many days, it is possible to take more than 200 kg a day, so that the smelted fish is processed into Tsukudani.

Mr. Yoshiaki Tsushima, a fisherman, said, “It's still small at the beginning of fishing, but I want you to get bigger and ride more fat.”

Onuma smelt fishing continues until the beginning of December when the lake freezes, after which you can enjoy smelt fishing on ice.
