After drawing joy on the faces of visitors for more than 36 years, the popular African elephants (Naima) bid farewell to the famous Giza Zoo in Egypt.
The head of the Central Department of Zoos, Dr. Mohammed Rajai, that «Naima» was the last African elephants in the park, noting in comments to DMC satellite channel, that the elephants arrived in the zoo in 1983 and was four years old.
"Until Saturday, Naima was in a very good condition in the performance in front of the audience who was playing with her without any problems. On Sunday, the park guards were surprised that she had slept on her left side because of severe pain," he said. At Cairo University and senior professors of veterinary medicine, elephants were given the necessary treatments, but did not respond, and died within a few hours.
Rajai said that the elephants suffered a severe stroke in the heart, which led to the death. Asked about the plan to provide an alternative elephant at the Giza Zoo, he said the department would work with the Ministry of Agriculture to buy a new elephant instead of Naima.
