A baby has died in a British prison cell after prison officials were neglected on the outskirts of Ashford in the south-west England province of Middlesex.

British police have begun investigating the causes of the death of the infant, who was born while his mother was serving her sentence.

The woman was alone in her cell when she gave birth to the infant, and there was no response from the jailers to the prisoner's condition.

The director of the prison, Vicky Robinson, as reported by the "Metro", that the infant died in prison, and that the prison officials provided support to the mother, adding that the officials are conducting a full investigation into the incident.

"We are supporting the mother during this difficult period, our feelings with her and her family, and our thinking is on this issue," Robinson said.

The newspaper "Metro" that the British authorities deal with the death of the infant inside the prison as "unjustified", noting that the investigation is continuing to determine the real causes of death.

It quoted a police spokesman as saying that police summoned the prison officers and detained them pending investigation on the day of the incident.

British law allows a mother to keep her children in prison until they are 18 years old.
