A long-established department store in Hiroshima for the first time showing the building exterior at the time of the bombing October 3rd, 16:24

Next year, 75 years after the bombing, a part of the outer wall used by the old department store in Hiroshima City was opened to the public for the first time. At that time, the inside of the building was burnt down and many people died, and the department store officials said, “I want many people to see it again and feel the importance of peace.”

The current main building of the department store “Fukuya Hatchobori Main Store” in Naka-ku, Hiroshima, celebrating its 90th anniversary, was a “bombed building” built in 1934, about 710 meters from the hypocenter. However, although the outer wall and the framework remained, the inside was burnt down and many people died.

Exhibited this time was an unglazed tile called “terracotta tile” that was used on the outer wall of the building at the time of the bombing. It was cut and stored when the outer wall was replaced 47 years ago.

Fukuya is open to the public for the first time from 1st of this month so that the history of the A-bombed building will be widely known about 75 years before the atomic bombing next year, and five cream colored tiles are put in a glass case at the entrance on the first floor. It has been exhibited.

Beside the tiles, a photo panel reflecting the history of the department store and the area around Hatchobori was also on display, making it interesting for shoppers to visit.

“This tile is valuable for Fukuya and Hiroshima. I want many people to feel the importance of peace again,” said Fukuya Sales Promotion Department Kazuyuki Tsukiyama.
