Dozing asleep or documenting a 79-year-old captain "No more than 2 weeks of rest" Oct. 2: 12:36

In January, the Coast Guard took a 79-year-old captain for business reasons as he took a boat while snoozing in the Seto Inland Sea off Okayama Prefecture and grounded a ship loaded with approximately 350 tons of iron scrap. I sent the documents on suspicion of danger. The shipping company is short of manpower, and the captain said that he had “no more than two weeks off”.

In the early morning of January 23rd, a trolley loaded with about 350 tons of iron scrap off the Kurashiki city, Okayama Prefecture, became unable to move on the shallows along with the “tug” that was towing the ship.

According to the Japan Coast Guard, a 79-year-old captain belonging to a shipping company in Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture said that he had taken a nap at that time, saying, “I had no rest for more than two weeks”.

As a result of the investigation, the Coast Guard sent a document to the captain on the suspicion of accidental traffic.

The captain received a short-term order of 300,000 yen for a grounding accident in November of last year.

According to the Coast Guard Department and the company's officials, this shipping company has fewer captains than the number of ships it owns, and the captain is mostly in their 60s or older.

The Coast Guard considered that long working hours might have led to an accident, and proceeded with investigations such as searching for shipping companies, but it was difficult for the company to stand up because there was no detailed work record remaining I decided.

The shipping company told NHK's interview that they would like to refrain from commenting.
