Nature magazine has announced the withdrawal to the molecular biologist of the University of Oviedo Carlos López Otín of the award granted in 2017 for his mentoring and mentoring work.

In an announcement published on its website, the magazine has indicated that the decision is taken after having detected integrity problems in the images of one of the works in which he is co-author.

According to the publication, the withdrawal of this award does not call into question the trajectory played by the Spanish scientist.

The journal Nature Cell Biology withdrew an article co-authored by López Otín after the authors could not locate the numerical data used to make some graphs.

In addition, in January of this year, the failures detected in eight articles by López Otín also led to their withdrawal by the Journal of Biological Chemistry .

The rector of the University of Oviedo, Santiago García Granda, considered this Thursday a "penalty" for the withdrawal of the prize for an "incident in his publications", although he considered that "these are issues that must be addressed".

"We have to cheer him up a lot and together we can make him move forward," said the rector, who stressed the work capacity and will of López Otín.
