Some people have itchy scalp, what causes it and how it can be addressed? To answer these questions, Professor Philip Papillas explained that itchy scalp has several reasons, most notably the dryness of the scalp, which is caused by frequent washing of hair, the frequent use of a hair dryer, as well as sunlight, sea water and pool water containing chlorine.

Dehydration of the scalp can be countered by a gentle shampoo rich in moisturizers, such as vegetable oils or herbal extracts, to soothe the irritated scalp.

Olive oil is also an effective weapon to fight drought and itching, and for this purpose a few drops of olive oil are placed on the scalp, leave it overnight until it comes into effect, then rinse in the morning. Papillas noted that itchy scalp may also be due to a disease, such as a fungus infection. In this case itching is accompanied by other symptoms, such as redness and the appearance of blisters and dandruff.

This requires prompt consultation of a dermatologist, taking into account not to scratch the scalp, otherwise the fungus will penetrate into the deeper skin layers, paving the way for a secondary bacterial infection.

Another possible cause of itchy scalp is sensitivity to certain active substances in hair care and styling products, which can be verified by a doctor allergy test. Initially, used products can be abandoned and replaced with additives free.
