Canadian writer Graeme Gibson, the sentimental partner of also writer Margaret Atwood, has died at 85 years of age, his family reported this Wednesday.

In a statement released by Penguin Random House Canada, Atwood said: "We are devastated by the loss of Graeme, our dear father, grandfather and husband, but we are happy because he achieved the quick exit he wanted and avoided the decline towards a greater dementia he feared. "

"He had beautiful last weeks and died in a good way, surrounded by love, friendship and appreciation. We appreciate his wise, ethical and committed life," added the Canadian writer of The Tale of the Maid (1985) and The Testaments , the book that released last week.

According to the family, Gibson died Wednesday in London, where he accompanied Atwood to launch The Testaments .

Atwood had canceled a few days ago appearances in Ottawa and Montreal as part of the book's promotion for "a disease in the family."

In 2017, Gibson, who was born in the Canadian city of London in 1934, reported that he was suffering from dementia.

Known for his commitment to the environment and freedom of expression, Gibson is the author of novels such as Five Legs (1969), Communion (1971) or Gentleman Death (1993).

He also wrote an interview book, Eleven Canadian Novelists , (1973) that includes conversations with Atwood and Alice Munro, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Gibson was a founding member of the Writers Guild of Canada as well as the Foundation of the Writers of Canada and president of PEN Canada.

In addition to writing, Gibson was a passionate environmentalist, known for his interest in bird watching.

Gibson, who in 1992 won the Order of Canada, the largest award granted by the country, was married until 1973 to the editor Shirley Gibson, with whom he had two children.

In 1973 he joined Atwood sentimentally, with whom he had a daughter, Eleanor Jess Atwood Gibson.
