Bone Marrow Bank 30th Anniversary Meeting Nagoya 15 September 17:23

A gathering was held in Nagoya to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the “Bone Marrow Bank”, which registers people who are willing to provide bone marrow, for bone marrow transplantation that is effective in treating leukemia and other diseases.

"Bone marrow bank" was established in Nagoya City in 1989, 30 years ago, ahead of the whole country, and in September of that year, the first bone marrow transplant was performed via the bank.

On the 15th, related parties gathered to hold a commemorative gathering, and President Yoshinao Kodera, President of Japan Bone Marrow Bank, said, “I want to try to save more people.”

Thirty years ago, Kazuhiro Hashimoto, who received the first bone marrow transplant for leukemia, expressed his thought, "Thank you for being able to live up to nearly 60 years old thanks to your efforts."

According to Japan Bone Marrow Bank, over 22,000 patients have received bone marrow transplants over the past 30 years, but only about 60% of those who wish to do so have received donors. The challenge is how to increase the number of registrations.

Takako Otani, an advisor to the National Bone Marrow Bank Promotion Liaison Council, who worked hard to establish a bone marrow bank, said, “I want to make sure that as many people as possible register.”
