The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare issued a notice about the rules for distributing foods that use “genome editing” technology that can manipulate genes freely, indicating that it will start operation from the 1st of next month. If information on how the gene has been modified is reported to the country, it will be possible to sell “genome-edited foods”.

Research and development to create new agricultural and marine products, such as tomatoes that contain a lot of blood pressure-lowering ingredients and Thailand with a large amount of body by manipulating genes using genome editing technology, is underway.

At the Expert Meeting of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare held on the 13th, information on the rules for distributing genome-edited foods, such as how genes were modified, whether allergic causative substances and toxic substances have increased, etc. The results of previous studies have been reported, such as requiring companies that have developed food to be notified in advance.

In addition, most of the genome-edited foods only cut some genes so that they do not work and do not incorporate other genes from the outside. It is said that there is no need for a safety review to investigate toxicity and carcinogenicity.

At the meeting, there was almost no objection, so the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced a rule-setting notice during the next week, indicating that it would begin operation on the 1st of next month.

Genome-edited foods are expected to be available for sale after next month's consultation with the country in advance.
