The American singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston died on Wednesday of a heart attack, reports among others The Guardian . The eccentric musician, whose work was admired by Kurt Cobain and Tom Waits, among others, turned 58.
Manager Jeff Tartakov confirmed the death of the cult artist. Various fellow artists, such as Judd Apatow and Ezra Furman, expressed their condolences. "You were a sweetheart. Very sad that you left us", actor Elijah Wood responded.
Johnston was born in California in 1961 and grew up in West Virginia. After moving to Austin in Texas, he experienced his breakthrough as an artist. His popularity increased after he handed out cassette tapes with his music to passers-by on the street. He then released various albums.
In 1994 he signed a contract with the Atlantic label, but it didn't come to a breakthrough with the general public.
