At the TIFF Film Festival in Toronto, sales of the upcoming Resurrected horror movie (Russian name “Resurrected”) began from producer Timur Bekmambetov and director Yegor Baranov. Pulsar Content will become a distributor of the tape.

The film takes place in the near future, after the Vatican learned to resurrect the dead. The main character is a priest of a virtual church named Stanley. His son died in a car accident, and it is on the deceased who they decide to test the technology. But when it turns out that the dead are brought back to life it is impossible to control, Stanley begins to search for the truth and reveals a conspiracy of a monstrous scale.

The new picture will continue the direction of screenlife developed by Bekmambetov (the plot of the picture unfolds on a computer screen or other gadgets). The project is being prepared for international rental.

New movie language

Timur Bekmambetov has been releasing screenlife tapes since 2015, and during this time the format is exemplified by the horror movie “Unfriended”, its sequel “Remove from friends: Darknet” and the thriller “Search” - managed to prove his commercial viability. The cost of each of the three paintings was limited to $ 1 million and paid off many times - the first film raised more than $ 64 million.

All these tapes were created in English and subsequently adapted to a foreign audience. And in the case of international distribution, at first glance the “simplified” screenlife complicates the process of filmmaking: because of the specific format for displaying in different languages, you have to re-shoot scenes where viewers read any labels (messages, application interface and much more - that is, almost everything).

It was because of the translation that difficulties arose with the rental of yet another picture of Bekmambetov and Bazelevs - “Profile”. This tape tells about a journalist who has decided on her own experience to try out a scheme developed by terrorists for the recruitment of young women.

Director Yegor Baranov released a half dozen full-length and multi-part films. Among them are the series “Fartsa”, “Locust” and “Sparta”, the rights to which were acquired by the streaming service Netflix. In “Sparta”, as in the new project, the theme of virtual reality and life on-line was reflected. But most of all, the director was remembered by the audience for the Gogol trilogy, the genre of which he himself defines as the “ironic thriller”.

According to Baranov, a concrete approach is needed when creating a horror movie.

“It is important to find something that can frighten a person, to keep him in suspense connected with his own life. That is, some details, moments or questions when the viewer can easily put himself in the place of the hero, because he knows it, ”the director said in an interview with RT.

Earlier, Baranov noted that the original plot of “Risen” was developed for the series, but Bekmambetov suggested making a full-length tape in a favorite format.

The director also emphasizes that, although the main component of any project is history, he is interested in working with the form. The new cinema language, in his opinion, gives filmmakers the opportunity to experiment, and also meets current trends when the viewer leaves the cinema and prefers to get acquainted with the news of rental at home.

“The screenlife format may be even more relevant for viewing just on gadgets, when you have the feeling that, in general, you are the main character in the story that happens on your computer,” Baranov believes.
