JAKARTA (Reuters) - Former Indonesian President Bahruddin Yusuf Habibi died on Wednesday at the age of 83 as he was receiving treatment at a military hospital in Jakarta after suffering heart problems.

"On behalf of the people of Indonesia and the government, I express my sincere sorrow for the death of Professor Bahruddin Yusuf Habibi," Indonesian President Joko Widodo told reporters.

Habibi was transferred last year to a hospital near Munich and underwent treatment for heart valve problems.

Habibi is credited for making Indonesia democratic after he took over from Suharto, who resigned under pressure in 1998 amid widespread unrest.

Habibi served as president from May 1998 to October 1999.
