British Airways has canceled about 100 percent of its flights due to an unprecedented and large-scale strike by its pilots that will last 48 hours, affecting the disruption of tens of thousands of passengers.

A consortium of airline pilots last month announced the first-ever strike by British Airways pilots in September over a pay dispute.

LONDON (Reuters) - British Airways said on Monday it had canceled almost all flights after a 48-hour strike began, disrupting plans by thousands of passengers, in an unprecedented move over a pay dispute.

"We have no other option but to cancel about 100 percent of our flights," the airline said in a statement.

The consortium of British Airways pilots notified the airline last month of a three-day strike in September, the first ever strike by British Airways pilots.
