The 76th International Venetian Film Festival was held from August 28 to September 7, 2019. 21 films claimed the main prize. The jury was led by director Lucresia Martel. Outside of the competition, the historical film “The King” with Timothy Chalamet, the picture “Burnt Orange Heresy” with Mick Jagger, as well as episodes of the series “New Papa” were shown. Films such as Vasily Shukshina's Viburnum, Martin Scorsese’s New York, Federico Fellini's White Sheikh, and other historically significant films were featured in the Classic Venice program.

The Venice Festival has existed since 1932 and is the oldest international film festival. The conditions for participation in the competition are quite strict: before the show, the film can not be shown outside the country of origin, as well as presented at other events. One prize cannot be awarded to several films or nominees (except for the honorary Golden Lion - it is often awarded to two movie figures).

During the existence of the festival, Russian and Soviet ribbons were awarded the main award four times. “Golden Lions” were awarded the “Ivan Childhood” by Andrei Tarkovsky, “Urga is the Territory of Love” by Nikita Mikhalkov, “Return” by Andrei Zvyagintsev, “Faust” by Alexander Sokurov. The winners of various awards have repeatedly become Soviet and Russian actors and directors.
