NEW YORK (Reuters) - American rapper Nicky Minaj surprised her audience yesterday by announcing to quit singing for "family formation."

The 36-year-old sent her message to her 20 million followers on Twitter, although she had never said she was pregnant or married. "I have decided to retire and form a family," she wrote.

Minaj said in June that she planned to marry her boyfriend Kenneth Betty, and in August changed her name on Twitter to Madame Betty, but did not say whether she had married.

The star shone about 10 years ago through her album «Pink Friday» (Pink Friday) and is famous for her candid comments and disagreements with other singers and color wigs.

Minaj, one of the few American rappers, won six US music awards before becoming a controversial judge in American Idol and was on Time's list of the world's 100 most influential figures for 2016.
