Egypt has nominated Ahmed Fawzi Saleh's "Poisoned Flower" to compete for the Oscar for best foreign film of the year.

The film starring Marihan Magdy (Cookie), Ibrahim Najari and Mahmoud Hamida is based on the novel "Roses toxic to Saqr" by the author Ahmed Zaghloul al-Shiti.

The film is set inside the tanneries in Cairo, where cleaning worker Tahia and her brother, Saqr, and their mother live.

Tahiyya has a close relationship with her brother, who cares about all his affairs and details of his life.

The film has already screened many Arab and foreign festivals and won some awards, including the award for the best Arab film at the Cairo International Film Festival in its fortieth session.

She added that "poisoned rose" received the largest number of votes from the audience.

Each country in the world has the right to nominate one of its films to compete for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, after which the US Academy of Film Arts and Sciences will make the preliminary list of accepted films in December and a shortlist in January.

The 92nd Oscars will be held on February 9, 2020 in Hollywood.
