“Today we can already talk about reaching a figure of 600 individuals. I recall that in accordance with the strategy adopted 10 years ago, by 2022 we must reach a population of 700 individuals. We proceed from the fact that this figure is real, comfortable for humans in terms of their relationships, possible conflicts with the tiger, it is this number that provides genetic diversity. Our experts say that if nothing happens, then this figure is quite achievable by 2022. In any case, the mathematical model that has been created suggests that we must do this and we have all the possibilities, ”Chuychenko said.

In addition, the head of the government apparatus spoke about the successful fight against poaching, which resulted in a reduction in the number of tiger killings.

“We have expert estimates, in accordance with which earlier from poachers in the region of 60-80 individuals perished. Now these numbers are reduced and amount to about 20 individuals per year. We defeated the so-called domestic poaching, which was carried out by local people or just hunters, because five years ago to shoot a tiger was considered valor, ”he said.

According to Chuychenko, toughening punishment can also help to fight against poaching. So, the Russian government had previously introduced a bill that had already passed two readings.

“We hope that the punishment will be toughened and, accordingly, this category of crimes will move into the category of so-called moderate severity,” he concluded.

In July, RTD and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) presented a fragment of the joint documentary film Wild and Free, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the foundation in Russia.
