For six years the Popular Party has endured the accusation that it destroyed evidence demonstrating the illegal funding of the party, by erasing the information contained in two hard drives belonging to its treasurer Luis Bárcenas . The accusation was based on statements by Barcenas himself, already immersed in an investigation into the origin of his estate. The PP admits that it erased the disks , but that it did so in strict application of the protocol provided for employees who cease to be. Yesterday the sentence that acquits the party of the crime of destruction of evidence was made public. The judge states that Barcenas - whose testimony was the only indication - had made contradictory statements on the matter and, consequently, his testimony is not reliable. Nobody knows what information there really was on those records.

The worst sentence that the PP could have received for this matter affects its moral credit. And it began to become effective from the first day the suspicions of the judge were published. To get a complete idea of how these types of suspicions are published in the reference press, it is enough to take the headline that opened yesterday El País : "Esperanza Aguirre, accused of controlling box b of the Madrid PP". The moral and technical dimension of this dirty headline could only be seen in all its purity if in six years six the same newspaper and identical size were forced to publish: "Esperanza Aguirre, acquitted for controlling box b of the PP in Madrid."

Whoever thinks that through a twisted argument I try to metaphorize about the ethical failure of our press will be right, but only in part. Because, metaphors apart, this is -justly, factually-, the plan that scandalously executed El País yesterday when reporting on its news website the acquittal of the PP. Beside the sentence, a veteran ringleader of the most sectarian faction of the newspaper dejected unperturbed: "A rude destruction of evidence." Of tests! Notice how the third paragraph smelled: "That maneuver [the destruction of the hard disk] had the scent [!] Of a desperate attempt to eliminate any evidence that could aggravate suspicions about the illegal financing of the PP for almost 20 years."

It is no longer that journalism influences, as it does - and thunderously - in the mood of the judge, through all kinds of direct and indirect blackmail. Is that journalism simply no longer abides . Its incessant lighthouse, which swept the night of the world and provided protection and comfort to the citizens, has become the most irresponsible distributor of injustice of our time.
