• CURIOSITIES: Curse: what you cannot imagine of the flattest country in the world
  • ASIA. Traveling to the Maldives in a 'low cost' code is possible and we tell you how

Getting there is already an experience. From the seaplane that picks up guests at Malé airport, capital of Maldives, you can enjoy 45 minutes watching atolls, small volcanic islands surrounded by coral reefs. Once it merits, the first impression of what we will live during the next days comes: turquoise waters that extend to infinity, lush vegetation next to the white sand and luxurious villas on the Indian Ocean. But soon we discover that it hides much more.

The Joali resort opened in October 2018 on the island of Muravandhoo, in the Raa atoll, north of Maldives, respecting the trees of the place with a focus on wellness and sustainable luxury. Its 73 villas are spread between the beach villas (on the island, with direct access to the beach) and the water villas (in palafitos on the water).

Each room has an infinity pool and everything in it is controlled by a tablet: from the opening of curtains to the temperature and lights. The magic of home automation. It is also possible to relax in your spa or taste some of the dishes of its four fusion cuisine restaurants . The dream of the Turkish businesswoman Esin Güral took shape when she visited Maldives years ago: taking on the challenge of creating her own space.

OWN IDENTITY

But it wasn't just about building a luxury resort, but about giving it its own identity. “In the luxury hospitality market there are many hotels that serve excellent food and fantastic service, but something essential is missing: soul. The inspiration was joy, ”he explains. Hence the name of the hotel: Joali, which evokes the joy of living or joy of living in English.

One of the appetizing 'water villas' of the resort.

An ecological treasure is hidden under its tables. Raa Atoll is one of the largest and deepest in the archipelago and, therefore, home to a wealth of marine life. Looking out at any rail and looking down is to discover a world full of crossbow fish, stingrays, turtles and small (harmless) sharks. But it is better to do it with the hand of marine biologist Samantha Reynolds, who every day takes guests snorkeling to show them the marine life and the reefs around Joali.

Local dishes merge with international food.

Another aspect that makes the difference of this hotel is art, which Güral is fond of. Decorating corners or hidden under the waves there is a collection of works by 13 international artists with a sustainable design concept. Highlights a platform in a tree shaped like a stingray from which to enjoy an impressive sunset.
