France is "accomplice" fires in the Amazon has recognized Emmanuel Macron. We import soy from Brazil to feed livestock. Self-sufficiency will be achieved by reducing our consumption of meat. We get there with KFC's "no chicken" nuggets.

France has its share of responsibility in the fires in the Amazon. "We are complicit" said Emmanuel Macron on Monday. In question, imports of soy.

France imports about two million tonnes of Brazilian soybeans for livestock feed.
This poses several problems.
First, via our soy imports, we are complicit in deforestation in Brazil. By the way, we note that it is GM soy. In our plates, we eat chicken legs fed GMOs.
Then this poses a problem of food dependency. To feed us, we need to import these proteins from Brazil. Our protein self-sufficiency is only 55%.

On Monday, Emmanuel Macron spoke of "protein sovereignty". What does that mean ?

This means that we have to get out of this system. There are two possible solutions. Either we produce soy ourselves, or we change our dietary pattern by eating less meat. Except that we do not necessarily all want to become vegetarian. Exactly, we will perhaps become a vegetarian without our knowledge.

On Tuesday, the KFC restaurant chain announced that it will now offer chicken-free fried chicken wings. What is interesting is that with this product, we do not address a militant vegetarian public.
KFC is aimed at a carnivorous and meat-loving public. They kept the brand "Fried Chicken" but to taste, says KFC. It is "very difficult to realize that it is plant-based meat".
In the same way, Burger King (who has released a meatless burger) even prides himself on having reproduced the illusion of beef blood to appeal to beef lovers.

We will see if we manage to deceive our taste buds, but it is a message of hope. Thanks to science, we can hope for an ecological transition that is not synonymous with deprivation. We will always have our Fried Chicken and our burgers but without meat, without the need to kill millions of animals.
