Brazil's environmental catastrophe and a series of wildfires in the Amazon are turning into a political and commercial confrontation between Brazil and the European Union.

Some EU countries are threatening to rethink the free trade agreement with Mercosur, which links Brussels to southern America.

In Brussels, several European lawmakers called on the European Parliament to suspend the Mercosur agreement.

European lawmakers also say they will not ratify the trade agreement when it is presented to them within seven months from now.

A source in the European Parliament said it could not be signed, at least until Brazil was given guarantees of a definitive halt to deforestation that is a loss for all mankind.

The European Commission said a free trade agreement with Mercosur could bring Brazil back on a wiser path. “The Mikosi Agreement is one of the best tools we have to stabilize Brazil in the Paris Convention and it is in fact the first trade agreement that has a“ binding ”obligation to effectively implement it,” said executive spokeswoman Mina Andreeva. She also announced that Brussels is ready to provide assistance and propose satellite tools to combat and extinguish forest fires.
