Disney comes with a new series around the Star Wars character Obi-Wan Kenobi, which will be performed by Ewan McGregor. The studio confirmed this on Friday night to Saturday night at the annual Disney event D23 Expo. The series will be shown via the upcoming Disney + streaming service.

What the name of the new series will be is not yet known. For years there have been rumors about a possible spin off about the character.

Last week McGregor said he was still negotiating the series, but Kathleen Kennedy, president of film company Lucasfilm, reported during D23 Expo that the scripts for the series are already ready and filming will start in 2020.

It will be the third Star Wars series on Disney +. From this fall The Mandalorian can also be seen on Disney +. This series is about a bounty hunter in the outer parts of the Star Wars universe. Pedro Pascal, who was featured in Game of Thrones and acted as Narcos , plays the leading role in this.

Disney also has an untitled series that should become a prequel to Rogue One in development. Diego Luna therefore resumes his role as pilot Cassian Andor.

The 48-year-old McGregor previously played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the films The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005). He has also been featured in The Force Awakens from 2015. The old Kenobi, seen in A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) was played by Alec Guinness.

Hello there! Just announced at # D23Expo: Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new original series, coming to #DisneyPlus.
