The case of the three sisters, whose father was killed by years of physical and sexual abuse, received widespread support and sympathy from broad sectors and human rights organizations.

The case sparked controversy over the 'domestic violence' of girls in Russia. It happened when Maria, Angelina and Christina Khachurian stabbed Mikhail's father to death in the family apartment in northern Moscow in July, when they were 17, 18 and 19, respectively.

The girls reported the attack to the police and confessed to the crime, saying they thought their lives were in danger if they did not take any action.

Investigators admitted that the sisters were beaten daily by their father, who also forced them into sexual acts and even physically abused them on the day of the crime.
