The Los Angeles Opera (USA) has appointed a lawyer to investigate "independently and thoroughly" allegations of sexual harassment against the Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo.

Sources of the institution, whose general director is Domingo himself since 2003, have confirmed to Efe that the "Opera of Los Angeles has hired the services of lawyer Debra Wong Yan, of the Gibson law firm, Dunn & Crutcher", who will begin his investigation "immediately".

Yang served as a prosecutor in the Los Angeles County Superior Court , according to the law firm's website for which he works, and has handled several cases of accusations of similar behavior .

In addition, the lawyer has been considered by the Los Angeles Business Journal as one of the 500 most influential people in Los Angeles since 2016 and directs the company's crisis cabinet, focused on "high profile" cases.

In 2017, the University of Southern California (USC) hired Yang to investigate the behavior of Carmen A. Puliafito, an ex-dean of her medical school who was accused of using drugs and celebrating parties with young addicts, prostitutes and other members of the institution.

Legend of the opera and world star of classical music, the Spanish tenor was accused last week by eight singers and a dancer for alleged sexual harassment .

Faced with the accusations, Domingo said in a statement that he always believed that all his "interactions and relationships" with women were "welcome and consensual . "

"People who know me or who have worked with me know that I am not someone who harms, offends or embarrasses anyone," he said.

But the Los Angeles Opera is not the only musical organization that has reacted to the accusations against Domingo.

Both the Philadelphia Orchestra and the San Francisco Opera , both also in the US, have canceled the tenor performances planned in its programming, one of them as the grand opening of the new season.

Actions confirmed in Europe

For its part, the Teatro Real de Madrid has confirmed the planned performance of Sunday for next May with La Traviata and has reiterated its "admiration and recognition" to the Spanish tenor.

The Madrid Coliseum considered that "the accusations that are poured on this type of behavior, given its consequences, must be founded and be proven in the corresponding instances."

Other European theaters such as La Scala in Milan (Italy), the Royal Opera House in London , the Vienna Opera and the Berlin Opera also keep their appointments with Domingo based on their presumption of innocence.
