At the door there are three priests and a nun rushing their cigarettes. In silence, his fingers glide on the WhatsApp. They are figurants of a very peculiar Vatican, a few kilometers from the real one. That center of power of the Catholic Church that, in 2016, surprised the television audience (believer, agnostic and atheist) more than the real election of a Jesuit and Argentine pope like Francisco.

In the HBO fiction The Young Pope , the fisherman's sandals were worn by someone wearing Hawaiian shoes , a smoking, young and beautiful Holy Father (Jude Law), who was seconded by a paraphilic cardinal (Silvio Orlando), fan of Naples and father of a disabled son. Almost nothing.

This crazy and amphetamine Vatican is a creation of Paolo Sorrentino. The director of The great beauty also leads the second season (entitled The New Pope) of this television fiction whose first two chapters will be screened in a few days at the Venice Film Festival.

We are facing, without doubt, one of the most anticipated releases of the year. This international production, which has Spanish participation by Mediapro, will be available in the autumn on the HBO platform.

The New Pope has been filmed surrounded by secrecy. The abrupt end of The Young Pope left us many letters to discover. That's why restricted access to filming proved to be so coveted. A walk through that Sorrentinian Vatican with a cast to which they have joined -conclave through- John Malkovich as guest star. And it won't be the only one. Since very impressive cameos are promised as, among others, Sharon Stone .

"For me the Vatican is the only place in the world that you think of before acting. The Vatican is a compliment to slowness," says Sorrentino.

That slowness does not exist in the San Pedro of cardboard-stone that hosts the shooting. On one wall there is a reproduction of the Last Judgment of Michelangelo, in one corner it shows La Piedad made in plaster, in the background the central nave of the great Roman basilica. Outside, surrounded by scaffolding, expect a papal balcony 1: 1 scale.

Paolo Sorrentino

The plot of The New Pope presents an event as peculiar as it is in force: the coexistence of two popes. Like F rancisco and Benedict XVI , Jude Law and Malkovich form a duopoly of the Catholic community because unlike Ratzinger none intend to retire and act as Pope emeritus.

Sorrentino is discreet. He doesn't want to talk much, but Jude Law's presence on his right is a beacon, after the open end he left the first season.

-I can only say that I was not going to pay Jude's cache to have him all the time sleeping in a bed.

-Not so much, not so much ... -answered the English actor making a funny gesture of denial- But I can't reveal anything.

Malkovich is more sober. Speak slowly. At the rate of gentle pedaling cadence when asked about his role as vicar of Christ: "I am not Catholic so I suppose being a pope would not be good news for the Church."

Javier Cámara , who met Sorrentino while promoting Talk to her , plays Cardinal Gutierrez. "Rolling here is amazing," he says. "It's something I keep reminding myself: I'm here!" The Spanish actor refers to the famous Cineccittà studio 5 that he steps on, where Federico Fellini filmed a large part of his filmography.

No more time. You have to shoot a scene. The wardrobe direction begins its combat dunk. Its managers, Carlo Poggioli and Luca Campora, deal with up to 120 robes every day . They should dress not only the popes, but also cardinals, priests and nuns.

-Whoever sees a cardinal in less than five minutes will give you a trip to Cuba.

They are words of Poggioni. Before so many layers of clothes it seems very difficult to achieve the ticket.

All prepared. In the scene John Malkovich and Javier Cámara walk together through San Pedro. They meet a woman on a bench carrying a baby. Malkovich whispers something almost inaudible. "Cut."

Sorrentino gives his approval, but he repeats himself. The second is the good one.

Pius XIII vs. John Paul III

Jude Law surprised everyone with his ultraconservative 'new age' dad. A marketing genius that oscillates between Simeón el Estilita de Buñuel and Vito Corleone. It embodies Pius XIII, a fictional pope whose nominal predecessor in reality (Pius XII) had a very controversial pontificate during World War II. From Malkovich's character we only know that he will take the name of John Paul III, a nod to Wojtya, the most influential Pope of the twentieth century, traveler, charismatic and conservative. We do not know how the coexistence between the two will be. But with Sorrentino de 'camarlengo' everything can happen.
