NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Mites can lead to serious health problems such as allergies, skin diseases and gastrointestinal diseases, German nutritionist Annette Saberski warned. Disinfected food should be disposed of immediately.

The sticky traps are not enough to fight this annoying micro-insect, which may come home with purchases such as rice, flour and spices, Sabersky said. All tanks should be thoroughly cleaned with vinegar, with hard-to-reach areas, such as cracks, cleaned by hot air to the hair dryer to kill the larvae and eggs in these areas.

It is preferable to stay away from chemical control by insecticides, and instead resort to non-chemical repellents, which rely on odors and essential oils such as lavender, cedar, mint and cloves to expel mites.
