An angry customer at a restaurant near Paris wanted a waitress because he had to wait a while to get the sandwich he ordered, a source familiar with the case said yesterday.

The victim's colleagues contacted the police after the customer shot him from a pistol in a restaurant in the suburb of Noisy-le-Grand in eastern Paris on Friday, the source said.

Attempts to revive the 28-year-old waiter failed and died at the scene.

The gunman, who witnesses said lost his temper, fled "because his sandwich was not equipped fast enough," which he did not like.

Police opened an investigation into the incident.
