A Russian airliner made an emergency landing in a corn field near Moscow shortly after takeoff on Thursday after gulls entered its engines.

The pilot and his assistant, who will be honored by the Russian authorities, managed to avoid any loss of life on board their Airbus-321, carrying 226 passengers and seven crew.

Twenty-three people were lightly and moderately injured in the accident, which took place immediately after the plane took off from Zhukovsky airport heading to Simferopol, the capital of the Crimean Republic in the south of the country, after its engine was disrupted by a collision with a flock of birds.
