Behind the decision lies the author's son, Matthew Salinger, who manages his father's legacy.

JD Salinger published only one novel, Catcher in the Rye, from 1951, during his lifetime. But the book about 16-year-old Holden Caulfield and his travels after being relegated from school has captured generations of readers and become an American classic.

He also published a number of short stories - the last one in 1965. Salinger died in 2010 at the age of 91.

Earlier this year, Matthew Salinger confirmed rumors that the father continued to write his entire life, in an interview with The Guardian. He also revealed that the family will publish the unseen works, but did not tell when.
