A copy of Rorcual Común , about 16 meters long, has died this Wednesday after being stranded in the Cala del Figo , located in the municipality of Tapia de Casariego , on the Asturian western coast.
The animal was located by a fisherman who gave notice to the Coordinator for the Study and Protection of Marine Species (Cepesma), who verified the presence of the whale next to the rocks and who transferred the information to the Emergency Service (SEPA) .
As noted by the president of Cepesma, Luis Laria , the animal remained for more than an hour hitting the rocks until he died in the area where he was stranded and now it is expected that the rise of the tide will move the corpse away from the coast.
It is, according to Laria, a common species in the waters of the Cantabrian, although in the case of this specimen it presented unusual patterns of coloration, and there were no precedents of a whale of this type stranded on the Asturian coast for 25 years .
Cepesma, a conservation organization that managed the Giant Squid Museum in Luarca until it was destroyed by a storm, has contacted the municipal authorities to offer to take charge of the rescue of the animal , both to avoid risks for navigation and to Perform an autopsy.
