The world famous Spanish opera singer Plácido Domingo is accused of sexual harassment by several women. This is reported by the American media under the authority of the AP agency, which conducted a major investigation into the allegations.
Several women tell AP that they have been put under pressure for years by the world-famous tenor and opera singer. Most of the women interviewed were in the profession at the start of their careers when they were approached by Domingo.
They would not dare say no to Domingo and therefore agreed to have sex with him. He would have said he would break their careers if they said no.
AP also spoke to women who confirm that they no longer came to work after they had refused the singer's advances.
"The entire opera world knew but did not intervene"
The testimonials show that many people in the opera world had known about this for years, but no one dared to intervene. "Women in his neighborhood were advised never to be alone with him, not even in a lift, and certainly not to drink alcohol with him."
Such incidents of the opera singer would have occurred over a period of thirty years. Domingo is said to have kissed the women or put his hands in their skirt in dressing rooms, hotel rooms and during lunch meetings.
Domingo denies allegations, "but times were different"
Eight female singers and one dancer make hard accusations against AP. Six other women say that Domingo continued to insist and make new proposals after they had rejected him. The stories are confirmed by more than thirty other people from the opera world that the news agency has spoken to.
The 78-year-old Domingo denies all allegations. He states that everything he did with the women happened by mutual consent. The singer does acknowledge that nowadays certain behaviors are viewed differently than in the past. "It has never been my intention to make women feel uncomfortable," he says. "But I am sorry if I did. It is very painful to hear."
Domingo has been performing for sixty years and has won numerous prizes
Domingo became world famous as part of the formation The Three Tenors, which he formed with Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras. He has been performing all over the world since the late 1950s and has won dozens of major prizes. In addition to his classical repertoire, he also had a big hit with the song Perhaps Love , together with singer John Denver.
The sexual harassment is said to have taken place for thirty years. At the time, Domingo was not only a tenor, but also a conductor and artistic director of the Los Angeles Opera. He has received several Grammies for his work.
