"Place", a play full of humor and poetry by the young Tamara Al Saadi at the Avignon Festival. © Christophe Raynaud De Lage / Avignon Festival

It became a ritual for the closing of the Festival d'Avignon. A concert will end on the evening of Tuesday 23 July at the 73rd edition of the theater festival. DJ Arnaud Rebotini will perform in the Palace of the Popes' Court of Honor the soundtrack of the film "120 beats per minute" around the fight against AIDS. A composition for which he received a Caesar in 2018. Back on the highlights of this edition, the sixth under the direction of Olivier Py.

A two-speed festival is perhaps what will remain of this edition under the theme of the Odyssey. From pieces at the top of theater art, Kirill Serebrennikov signs an ode to freedom in tribute to another artist like him who wrestles with the authorities of his country, the Chinese Ren Hang. Or Phèdre in the form of comedy by François Grémaud, a joyful moment of writing and acting.

The Brazilian Christiane Jatahy has shipped us all over the world: Syrian migrants to the Amazon rainforest. Alarming, but far from being tearful. The young Tamara Al Saadi is part of her dual identity Iraqi and French for a play full of humor and poetry on the difficult path of an immigrant in French society.

And then there are pieces that wanted to send a political message right off the bat and that missed the theater. Architecture , the opening performance of Pascal Rambert with weak text despite a cast of stars. Akram Khan, the choreographer star succeeds him in the Court of the Popes Court for a show on the end of the world heavy and windy. Alexandra Badéa looks at the Algerian war in a room that falls flat. The theater tribune for politics, it goes without saying, but politics alone on the set is not theater.

Also to listen: our Guest Culture today is the young director Tamara Al Saadi who presents her play Place au Festival d'Avignon.
