A Russian warplane violated the airspace of South Korea today, prompting the air force to fire fighter jets towards it and firing warning shots.

South Korea said it had fired warning shots at a Russian warplane that violated its airspace over its eastern coast.

A South Korean military official told AFP that the Russian plane violated Korean airspace twice, prompting the South Korean air force to send its aircraft and fire warning shots at them.

It was the first time a Russian airliner had violated a South Korean airspace, the official said, adding that the military was investigating the incident.
