The French navy found the wreckage of its submarine Minerv, which disappeared off the Mediterranean coast of Toulon in 1968, killing 52 people.

"We have just found Minerv, a successful operation, a moment of satisfaction and proof of technical proficiency, my heart is with the families that have waited so long," French Defense Minister Florence Barley said.

In 2018, the government decided to revive efforts to search for Minerv, following requests from grieving families. Thanks to the submarine wreckage, a new technique for sound waves and marching is used.

The reason for the sinking of the submarine is still unknown.
