Italian police have asked two German tourists to leave Venice and fined them more than $ 1,000 after being spotted by witnesses attending coffee with a small gas under the historic Rialto Bridge in the city, which was recently renovated with millions of dollars.

The pair have been charged with violating the newly enacted law to keep order in public places amidst the huge numbers of tourists the city receives annually, according to NewsWeek.

The new law included a number of conditions, including that tourists wear shirts in public places, banning excursions in certain areas, banning bathing in fountains or diving in channels, and each violation corresponds to a fine issued by the local police.

The city has an estimated 30 million visitors each year, while some 55,000 people live in the city.
