Five children were killed and 19 others injured when a car raided them today in northeastern China for a reason still unknown, state media reported.

The tragedy occurred in front of a primary school in Huludao City in Liaoning Province as the children crossed the road. The driver was arrested, the official Chinese Television said on the site.

All children were in kindergarten, meaning they were under six years of age.

Videos showing social media showed a car swerving across the road and the pupils trampling, as at least two children, lying on the ground and absent from consciousness, appeared on the street.

Chinese TV reported that victims of the accident were being treated.

Traffic accidents are frequent in China, where transportation authorities are trying to apply safety laws strictly. Earlier this month at least 13 people were killed when a bus hit a bridge in Chongqing Province after a fight between the driver and a passenger.

Eleven people were killed in September when a car rammed a crowd into a public square in Hunan province.
